Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal is the most convenient Singapore departure point for many travellers flying into Changi Airport or staying on the eastern side of the city. It is also the direct gateway to two quite different parts of Batam: Batam Centre and Nongsapura.

The sailing is only one part of the transfer. Add the trip to the terminal, ticket or boarding-pass collection, baggage check-in, Singapore departure control and Indonesian immigration after arrival. A short ferry ride can still occupy much of the morning.
Where Can You Go from Tanah Merah?
For Batam, the two main choices are Batam Centre and Nongsapura. Current schedules also include other regional destinations, including Tanjung Pinang on Bintan, so read the destination field carefully before paying.
Batam Centre
Batam Centre is the safer general choice for a first visit. The terminal sits beside Mega Mall and provides road connections toward Nagoya, Harbour Bay, Bengkong and the southern parts of Batam.
It is not within walking distance of Nagoya. Maps can make Batam’s urban districts look close together, but traffic and road layout mean that a taxi or ride-hailing car is still required. Travellers heading toward the Barelang route will also need a vehicle.
Choose Batam Centre when the hotel is in or near Batam Centre, when the itinerary covers several parts of the island or when you simply want the widest range of onward options.
Nongsapura
Nongsapura serves the Nongsa area in northeastern Batam. It is the logical arrival point for resort stays, nearby golf courses and trips where the hotel provides a scheduled transfer from the ferry terminal.
This route can remove a long drive across Batam. It can also create one. Nongsapura is inconvenient for a weekend focused on Nagoya shopping, Harbour Bay restaurants or nightlife in Lubuk Baja.
Confirm the hotel transfer before leaving Singapore. Ask for the meeting point, whether the ride is included and what happens if the ferry is delayed. A resort may run transfers around selected sailings rather than every arrival.

Tanjung Pinang Is Not in Batam
Tanjung Pinang also appears in Tanah Merah schedules. It is on Bintan Island, not Batam.
The two islands belong to the same Indonesian province and are frequently sold by the same ferry companies. That does not make the terminals interchangeable. A Tanjung Pinang ticket will not take you to a Batam hotel.

Getting to Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal
From Changi Airport
A taxi or private-hire car from Changi Airport normally takes about 10 to 15 minutes in light traffic. This proximity is the main reason to use Tanah Merah for an air-to-ferry connection.
The figure does not include immigration at Changi, baggage collection or waiting for a car. An aircraft landing at 9:00 am does not place you at the ferry terminal at 9:15 am.
Airport Travel Time Is Not Connection Time
The drive from Changi may take only 10–15 minutes, but you still need to leave the airport, collect baggage, reach the ferry counter and complete departure formalities.
Leave a wide margin after an international flight. Delayed arrival, a distant airport gate or slow baggage delivery can remove an hour without warning. Avoid booking the final Batam ferry of the day immediately after a flight unless you are prepared to stay in Singapore if the connection fails.
Travellers arriving late in the evening may find it easier to sleep near Changi and take a morning sailing.
By MRT and Bus
There is no MRT station at the ferry terminal. Travel to Bedok or Tanah Merah MRT, then use SBS Transit bus 35 toward Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.
The shared name creates confusion. Tanah Merah MRT is not beside the port, and walking from the station with a suitcase is not a sensible shortcut.
Bus 35 works when you have light luggage and plenty of time. A family paying several fares and carrying large bags may find that a taxi or private-hire car is simpler.
From Central Singapore
A taxi from central Singapore commonly takes around 20 to 30 minutes outside heavy traffic. Friday evenings, rain and road congestion can lengthen the trip.

Parking is available at the terminal. At the time of publication, the official rate is S$1.80 per hour or part of an hour, capped at S$33.76 for each 24-hour block. Check the latest rate before a longer trip.
For a two- or three-night Batam stay, compare the total parking cost with two private-hire journeys. Leave time to find a space, unload and walk to the terminal concourse.

Hand luggage is limited to 10 kg per person, with maximum dimensions of 55 × 40 × 20 cm. Each boarding pass includes 20 kg of free checked baggage. One checked item must not exceed 30 kg, and paid excess baggage is accepted up to a total limit of 40 kg per passenger.
The free allowance cannot be combined between several boarding passes. A couple cannot automatically use one person’s unused allowance to cover an overweight suitcase belonging to the other passenger.
Bicycles, surfboards, wakeboards and items longer than 1.5 metres are treated as odd-sized baggage and may carry a separate handling fee. Golf bags should be checked with the ferry operator before travel rather than assumed to be ordinary luggage.

This matters most when connecting to an evening flight from Changi. The hour gained on the outbound trip is lost on the return.
GST Refunds at the Ferry Terminal
Singapore’s Tourist Refund Scheme is not available to travellers leaving through the sea terminals. A visitor who bought eligible goods in Singapore cannot process the GST tourist refund at Tanah Merah in the way they might at Changi Airport.

The renovated terminal has self-service check-in kiosks, operator counters, waiting areas, a convenience store, money-changing services, duty-free shops and a lounge.
The facilities are adequate for check-in and a short wait. This is not Changi Airport. Food choices are more limited, and an early sailing may leave fewer outlets open.
Carry any essential medicine, baby food or specific dietary item with you. A terminal shop is useful for water and snacks, but it should not be the only plan.
Arriving at Batam Centre
After leaving the ferry, passengers pass through Indonesian immigration and customs. Queues depend on how many vessels arrive close together.
Mega Mall stands beside the terminal, which is convenient for an ATM, food or a short pause. Nagoya and Harbour Bay still require a car.
Official taxis, ride-hailing vehicles and hotel transfers are the usual onward options. Pickup rules may prevent an app driver from stopping directly outside the main exit, so follow the meeting instructions in the app.
Save the hotel address and map pin before travelling. A driver may recognise the district more readily than the English hotel name shown on an international booking site.
Arriving at Nongsapura
Nongsapura is smaller and more closely linked to resort transfers. Travellers are often met by hotel staff, but the arrangement should be confirmed rather than assumed.

When no driver appears, contact the hotel or use an official terminal transport desk. Do not accept the first unverified offer simply because the arrivals area is quiet.

Start by checking the correct Batam departure terminal. A ticket from Nongsapura cannot be used at Batam Centre, even though both ferries travel to Tanah Merah.
Return times are shown in Indonesian time. Arrive early for check-in and Indonesian exit control, then allow for Singapore immigration after landing.
Foreign visitors returning to Singapore generally need to submit the SG Arrival Card within the permitted three-day period before arrival. It is free through Singapore’s official ICA service and does not replace a visa when one is required.
The drive from Tanah Merah to Changi may be short, but the ferry-to-flight connection includes immigration, baggage collection, finding a car and airline check-in. Avoid a connection that works only when the ferry is exactly on time.
